No proof of purchase

I bought a sweater from House of Fraserin january, have only worn it a few times, the last time i washed the sweater it shrank in the wash. When i phoned HoF to ask for a refund or store credit, they said i had to have proof of purchase yet i had no recipt and had purchased it with cash. The make of sweater is only sold by HoF so i dont get why this isnt enough proof. Does anyone know what my rights are in this situation?

No proof of purchase - no refund I'm afraid. If you had bought it by cc or debit card that would have done. but you bought it with cash so its a no go.

Proof of purchase means you havent stolen it or bought it in a charity shop or car boot sale for 50p. Youve no idea how many people try this one on
    Sorry

It's not so much the proof that you bought it at HoF, but also the receipt would have the date on it, showing you'd only had it a few months.

How long have they stocked and sold that particular jumper? If it only started being sold in January, then it can only be 7 months old, but if it's a classic style that has been sold for years, for all they know you could have washed it 100s of times, or you could have bought it on ebay...

I had the same problem with a Next t-shirt which went out of shape when washed a few times, and even though I had no receipt, they swapped it for me, as it was clearly out of shape.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

If you are sure you washed the jumper according to the washing instructions then try taking it into a store for an exchange but as others have said, this will be difficult without proof of purchase. If they do agree to do anything for you they may insist on it being sent away for testing to make sure that it is their fault but as the jumper was purchased over 6 months ago, the burden of proof now would rest with you and not with the store so they may advise that it is up to you to prove that there was an inherent fault at time of purchase. Was it a very expensive sweater?

I'm sorry to say (as mentioned above) that your rights are pretty clear on this one: Without some form of proof of purchase, you have no rights...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Theres a lesson to be learned, keep your receipts for 12 months at least.
