You believe correctly

I recently took a £5 pair of socks back to a Tesco store for a refund. They were originally purchased online, obviously using my card. They offered me the cash or refund onto the card, I chose the card.
I know it's only £5, but if what is being said about money laundering laws is true (I'm sure it is), then they shouldn't have offered me the cash.0 -
I have been refunded in cash when I paid on a card at wickes but was only about £80

When I had to return something to Robert Dyas that had been paid for with someone else's card they said that they couldn't refund in cash but could refund to any card so I had the refund paid onto my own debit card.xxx Nikki xxx0

Every refund I've ever had in Sainsburys has been in cash when I paid with card..
If it is a law then it's not very well advertised0 -
It all depends on how you interpret the law:
Proceeds of Crime Act 2002:-
http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts2002/20020029.htm
Section 328 Arrangements
(1) A person commits an offence if he enters into or becomes
concerned in an arrangement which he knows or suspects facilitates
(by whatever means) the acquisition, retention, use or control of
criminal property by or on behalf of another person.
I think the best way to look at it is:
If a retailer OFFERS and then gives a cash refund for a card purchase, they have no reason to suspect that it could be fraudulent and is therefore ok
If a retailer is ASKED for a cash refund for a cash purchase, they then could suspect that the goods had been obtained fraudulently and therefore break the law if they give a cash refund...
Hope that makes sense? If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

I suppose it depends if you are seeking a full refund.
As an example in my job (Customer Service Desk at Argos Store) if someone returns a £19.99 item (paid by card) to buy a £19.59 item then I would give them the 40p difference back in cash as it would cost the company more to process the refund transaction than the refund amount. I set a limit usually of if the exchange amount due back to the customer is £3 or more then it goes back onto the card.
If that person was returning the £19.99 item for a refund, not an exchange, then it would be have to be the exact same same card that the money was paid on that the refund would be put on.
A similar thing happened to me in Asda, I bought 2 bottles of screenwash for my car at 69p each, and I needed cashback so I used my debit card on the self checkout and withdrew £10. As I was leaving the store I realised that the bottles were concentrated, not ready to use, so I took them to the customer service desk and asked for a refund, and as I was getting my card out for him to put it back on he'd got the cash out of the till![DISCLAIMER: Any posts made by myself are my opinions and do not represent my employer]

In our stores, if it was paid by card, the till will only let us put it back onto a card, whatever the amount (yes, I have done an exchange and refunded 1p onto a card!). If the original card is not available, we can put it back onto a card of the same type (but it will have to be yours).Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
