this is prob gonna sound really silly but...apple help please?

Ok so i went down to the shops there.....actually before i go into this...

I have a serious fruit and veg phobia, and at 22 i really need to get over this, i'm going to have a go on my own before going to doctor and asking for therapy.

So i bought a wee apple. A pink lady actually...i thought the name might make me want to eat it??

Whats the best way to go about cutting it up into VERY small pieces??
like baby sized pieces?

This prob sounds really daft, but i've never been around fruit or veg to find out the best way to do this. I used to run the other way when my mum was cooking things, and was never even able to touch fruit or veg before this year...so i think i've made a good start.

It depends on what your phobia is about where fruit is concerned. Personally I love apples BUT only when they're a little bit 'soft'. Can't be doing with the hard/crisp ones. I like Golden Delicious when they've got a bit yellow and even 'wrinkly'. Crisp apples just set my teeth on edge lol.

Have you been able to eat apple pies/crumbles? If so, maybe it would be a good idea to cook the apple a bit first. I often peel apples, cut them across the middle (stalk to the top), then - using the little five-pointed star bit in the middle as a guide - cut it into small chunks. I then put those in a microwave dish with a little bit of water and ping them for a couple of minutes. I like this cooled with some yoghurt/fromage frais.

I like them crisp. Personally for the kids I quarter the apple, cut a little V shape to remove the seeds/core and then half each quarter. You could then go further and half each bit then half again until they are of a size you can manage

Ollie - I'm the opposite - can't stand soft apples - they have to have a crunch :D

An apple has a core that goes from stalk to the little brown dent bit the other side. It's about the size of an empty cotton reel I suppose - don't eat that bit ;) Sorry if you already know that but thought I should say it in case.

To cut an apple I usually put it on a board stalk pointing upwards and cut a slice off the side from top to bottom. You can then cut that bit up. Carry on doing that round the apple, leaving the core section.

The skin is a completely different texture than the apple so I would be inclined to try one piece with the skin, one without.

By the way, it's not a silly question - I only fried an egg for the first time last month as I always scramble or poach them and had never had courage to try it :o

Get an apple corer and take the core out. That means that everything that is left is edible.
That't the only way I'd eat an apple (unless someone else had cut it up and cored it manually). I don't like the idea of eating towards the inedible bit.

If it helps, once the core is out, peel it. Though personally I like the skin.

Then just cut it up any way you like. Doesn't really matter by that point, does it?

If you're anything like me the above comment about soft apples / cooked apples will have you running a mile. The crisper the better, in my book.

Good luck with it. Pink Ladys are my favourite apples, then Granny Smiths. Other things to try might be seedless grapes and raw carrots.
Let us know how you get on. Seriously, you might even like it. But buying it is a good start - well done. Holding it, looking at it, cutting it up - all good next steps. Eating it - even better. Go on, you can do it!
  • thanks for the help everyone...no i didn't know it had a core!
How sad is that? I mean i'm 22 and i didnt even know that there where different types of apples?!

No never ate apple crumble either, so i have no idea if i'll prefer them cooked or not!

I'm off to cut it up and see how i get on :s

    so nervous

you will be fine. One thing to remember is they say babies need to taste something new 10 times before they know if they like it or not so please try the appple several times. You can also buy it dried in supermarkets which I like

    Well done :j

That's a huge step - at least after you have tried it you can decide if you like it - or not :D

Tastes do change though - there's veg I used to really hate that I now eat - no idea why, think it's just that I made myself eat some of them as they are good for you - like broccoli - don't mind it so much now.

You're doing fine, littlepinkstars. Please don't feel silly. If it helps, I'm 49 and have no idea how to cook chicken! LOL

Well done you for having the determination to deal with this.
