BT Payment charges

  • Nope - Quarterly billing and on the front page of the bill, under "How to save on your bill" it reads (amongst other things)....

"The fee for not paying by Direct Debit is now £9 per quarter"

What it does not list under "How to save on your bill" is simply "Switch to another supplier who doesn't penalise you for not giving them the run of your bank account"!

BT's Payment Processing Fee is still £1.50/month (£4.50/quarter) - see HERE.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Well, afraid mine is £9 and its not just in one place. Aside from the message under "How to save on your bill" it also appears in the following places....

Bill Summary (front page) "Payment Charges £9.00"
Bill Totals (Page 3) "Payment charges £9.00"
Payment Charges section (Page 3) "Payment charges £9.00" in the headline, then a further "Payment Processing Fee - £9.00" appears twice under the headline
VAT Breakdown (Page 4) 0% "Payment Processing Fee - £9.00"

So its written all over the bill, not just in one place. Have sent them a cheque for £4.50 less than they want anyway telling them that £9 to bank a cheque is an unjustifiable and unreasonable amount.

In any case, can you trust an organisation like BT to get anything right, let alone accurate details on their webpage?

Received my (business) bill today and yup there it is in B/W **£9.00**

I recently opened this account and at the time BT were only offering me 2 & 3 year contracts. When I queried is there anything else they said "yes, 5 years"!!!!!I pushed and asked the question on whether I could a 12 month contract, which they said was possible! They are not offering me a free mobile phone etc so why the hell am I signing up to a 2 year contract, not that I would anyway. Anyway (back to the point) I am wanted a 12 month contract, as I am waiting for a decent provider at a resonable cost to appear so that I can switch (ASAP). I will sign up for DD to avoid the £9.00 charge, but its a disgrace and I have nothing but contempt the company, and you know what the call advisors at the other end of the phone as they dont help themselves as their customer service is non-existant. I am pretty sure that this service would not get them much business if there were a "private" company without a monopoly (which they still have).

Not if there is no bill to pay!!

I am sure if you search this site you will find out what I am talking about.

.As you point out you pay nowt if their is no bill to pay, because
£1.50 is a payment processing fee and if their no payment to process they cant charge a fee for doing so,

PS. I cant see where the poster you quote from was suggesting you had to pay the fee if their is nothing to pay.

Are you billed monthly. If so could it it be £1.50 non dd fee plus £7.50 late payment.

BT's Payment processing fee is laid out here.

    It is:

    Residential customers
Payment processing fee per bill, where this is a monthly billed account: £1.50
Payment processing fee per bill, where this is a quarterly billed account: £4.50

    Business customers
Payment processing fee per bill, where this is a monthly billed account: £3
Payment processing fee per bill, where this is a quarterly billed account: £9

Thanks. That explains the apparent discrepancy - business customers are charged double what residential customers are charged for not paying by direct debit.
