Compost Bins

Options
We are moving into the first house of our own tomorrow :D

I am very much hoping to grow our own friut and veg in our nice garden and would like to have a compost bin.

Can someone tell me what goes into the bin? We used one at a campsite at the weekend, and it was pretty much everything including meat bones and egg shells, but wont this attract rats?

There's lots of threads on composting, try a search & see what comes up.
I've always been told never to put meat products or cooked food into a compost bins as you will get maggots. "Vegetarian" waste only!

Alternatively, I save my egg shells, cruch them up and use in garden to keep slugs away from my veggies! (they dont like crawling over the crushed up shells)

Check under Growing your own in the Food section of the MEGA Index sticky - there are some good threads listed on composting along with some good links.

Hi I'm a good composter. I throw in all veg & fruit peelings, egg shells, tea bags, plant material except weeds. Grass clippings can go in but I find they take ages to rot down. No meat or bones. If you want to do that get a 'green cone'. My best compost bin was open and made of pallets. Now after moving house I have a cone thingy where you put the material in at the top. I had to turn it all out the other day though as it wasn't rotting down very quickly. Hopefully turning it will speed things up

Check with your local councils recycling centre, they might sell compost bins at reduced rates. Mine (Caradon) sold a desent sized bin for £5 and that included free delivery and full instructions.

My local council gives composters out for free, however my local B&Q is selling the same composter for £30

I'm no expert, but I believe that there are compost bins that take meat and fish skins, etc if you treat them with Bokashi.
