Electric Descaler For Water Pipes??

Hi, can anyone help?, where I live the water is very hard and i seem to remember my late father installing a device that clamped around the cold water feed pipe, it was plugged in to the electrics.Am I delusional or does someone know what I'm talking about?.

I moved in mid January and the pump is already clogged up, they dont fit any filters in over here, the best that a local plumber could offer was to strip down the pump every 6 months and clean it out with kettle descaler!!

Someone Please help

Thanks

I have an electric desacaler or water softner (i think they are called) it was a cable that you wrap around the cold water feed to create a magnetic field. It does not stop scale completely but it has made a difference and any limescale build up on taps etc is much easier to remove. Plus we have had no corrosion or marks left on sinks etc.
It is similar to this one http://www.scalewatcher.co.uk/ . We got it from B&Q for about £30-40.

Personally I'd watch him the first time - then do it myself on future occasions.

I had bore hole water at the last house - hard as a rock. Used to eat an immersion heater every 9 months. I had to acquire the skill to change it and keep a spare at hand - as they exploded at inconvenient times.

I used, eventually, a descaler similar to this :-

.......regret to say there was no noticeable improvement. Spy on the plumber ! ;)
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

This is a copy of my post just over a year ago on Monday:-

I live in the Cotswolds which is a really hard water area, and fitted a Salamander Microwave 22 months ago. Similar to the ScaleWatcher. I can't believe the difference. Used to have to clean the shower head at least every 3 months and haven't had to touch it since. And the kettle is still clean. I bought mine from Travis Perkins at a discount for £49.94 but think the retail price is around £80. I think if you go direct to Salamander they will sell for around what I paid. I seem to remember being told that when I contacted them after I bought mine.
In addition to having a 5 year warranty against faulty workmanship it also has a 6 months unconditional satisfaction or money back guarantee. (Proof of purchase required)

    Tel: 0121 378 0952
    Or 0121 378 4508

I had better say that I don't have any connection with this company whatsoever except for being a very satisfied customer.

I will add here that another year has gone by and I still haven't had to clean the shower or kettle.

i personaly think these things are a scam, tell me this, if you have scale in your pipes before you fit one, where does it go after you fit one.? it doesnt magicly stop coming into your water main.

answer.. is builds up like mad around the device you fitted acting like cholesterol in your arterys. thats if it even does anything in the first place.

if you need soft water get a proper 3rd tap system.
