I have a cupboard in my box room that I want taking out leaving just the box bit. I'm then after making the box, part of the base of a low cabin bed, with a couple of drawers & a cupboard fitting under it. I also need a small shaped desk with a couple of drawers underneath & shelves above in the same room. This is for a childs bedroom & the room is only about 7' x 8' so it's not very big. Just been quoted £1175 + VAT does anyone know if this sounds about right

Roughly how many days work does he think it will take? Are materials included or will they be billed separate & if billed separate will you pay receipt price or will there be a mark up?
I use a carpenter that charges £150 day, a very hard worker who works up to 6-7pm, so he does achieve a lot in his working day. This is on the outskirts of London & I know prices up north can often be much lower.
The vat is such a killer on jobs, pushing the price up & is something my guy doesn't charge, :j although obviously you do have to pay it on materials. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Thanks for the reply Cattie. The guy was going to supply all the materials, he said wood (pine) for the bed & MDF for the small desk. As far as I know they wouldn't be billed seperately
I got the impression this wouldn't be that big a job but he didn't give us a time for it. We're in the East Midlands btw. I'm now trying to find someone else to quote for me so if anyone knows anyone who might be suitable please let me know.
