Static on BT Line

Evening All,

I have very bad static on my BT land line. I have tried BT and they advise that there is no fault on the line, although clearly there is.

The line enters the house through the front wall into an NTE5 socket (bt master) upon removing the front cover to test the line with the test socket it is dead...

I have one extension of this line which BT ran from the front wall to the dinning room.. I can see the wire go round the living room etc, this is the only extension in the house. The extension is also a NTE5 socket I removed the front cover on this one and the line is still full of static.

I initally throught that it was a fault with the phone so I checked using an old normal phone, when this did not resolve the issue, I changed the mircofilter, once again it did not resolve the issue.

I don;t have anything else plugged into the line apart from ADSL and the phone, sky box is not connected to the line.

I am not sure where to go next, as BT will charge me if they find it to be a fault with the extension cable that they put in. With the master test socket not working, does it mean that the extension (also master socket) is the one that they are repsonsible for ?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Disconnect everything from the line except a phone. No ADSL, filters or Sky. Do you still have a problem?

If Yes, then the next issue is your NTE5. Is the incoming phone line wired to this box or to another box? If it comes to this one, then it should be wired to the backplate with the test socket [not yours to fix]. If it goes to another, then it needs a more serious sort out.

If the test socket is not working, then that belongs to BT and they need to come and fit you a new master at their expense. But they won't fix your extension at the same time unless you pay, because that is your responsibility. (I think if BT install extensions then they cover them for one year only). For the extension you will be charged a mimimum of about £90, so DIY or get a local handyman/electrican to do it for a third of that cost.

  • It does sound as though you have the same problem i had with BT line it got so bad here i couldnt hear the person talking on the other end of the line although BT insisted that the line was fine. In the end i was forced to call out the BT engineer they thought they had fixed it but a few days later the static was back so i called them out again. They did a check and found out it was a rusty connection on a telegraph pole about 200 yards away once they had sorted that out the phone was fine and i wasnt charged. Hope this helps
