Finally spoke to the guy couple of minutes ago and he was very apologetic and stated that he will be going up to the nationwide this morning and will put the cash back into my account straight away... so my fingers are firmly crossed that he does by his word

Bad advice. An order for specific performance would not be granted in this case.

OP - get your deposit back and find an alternative.
