I was in a similar situtation when we moved from South Africa to England 6 years ago... I left behind HUGE debt... and for a 25yo it was massive! Eventually they found me in England and I was warned by the friendly south african on the other end of the phone, not to return to the country of my birth as I will be arrested upon landing - needless to say, I didn't and spent a lovely 4 week holiday sunning myself on my local beach a few weeks later!
The short answer is no, they normally don't check before giving you credit in another country but with Austrailia, I have a sneaky feeling they might do. The reason I say they might is because my aunt has recently moved there and she was credit checked each time she applied for various things... She left no debt in England but she did have a call from her local HSBC back in England to ask her permission to go ahead with a credit check.0 -
oh no am in trouble then please anyone else with more information on this I would appreciate it thanks for your reply an any more information please would really appreciate it0

I don't know the answer to your question, but a lot of banks are international, they will know your nationality, so if they wanted to know your UK credit history, my guess is that they could easily find it out.

I found this for you ... http://www.debtquestions.co.uk/topic_of_the_month.php
Also, I've just had a look at some paperwork my Aunt left behind before her move... she needed a credit reference from her bank in order to open up a bank account in Oz.0 -

Are you wanting to flee the country because of your debit. I think you will find that as Australia is a Commonwealth country then they will check you. Also before you reside in Australia you have to have at least $10,000 AUS with you so that you can support yourself.
Why not tackle the debt that you have and post up your SOA (statement of affairs) and that way the clever people on here may be able to advise you. https://www.makesenseofcards.com/soacalc.html - follow the instructions to copy and paste it here (removing the weblinks at the bottom as you are not allowed to post those). Have you considered contacting one of the debt charities here in the UK e.g. CCCS.0 -
Running away won't solve anything... Take responcibility for what you have done and deal with things here. Post an SOA and the helpful peeps will tell you what the best solution to your debts would be - it could be a DMP, IVA or bankruptcy - as Martin says - there is no debt problem that can't be solved.
Running away from it however is NOT solving itIt's what a 7 year old does when they have broken something and don't want to loose the TV priviledges...

Hi Vix
I was in the exact same situation. Three years ago I entered a DMP whilst my application to emigrate was being processed. I continue to pay my DMP whilst here although from what I can gather if i choose to stop paying my debt there is not a lot my creditors can do as my debts are all in the UK and are therefore unenforceable in Aus. I reson that I may want to go back to the uk at some point so its defiantely worth paying my debts.
When you move here you will have no credit rating so at first you will not be able to get any form of credit. Once you can prove you reg pay all your bills your credit rating will increase. we were able to get a credit card within six months but were not able to buy a sofa on finance. We have now been here two years, regularly pay all our bills on time. Have managed to get finance for a car (twice), purchase 2 tv's on finance (both now paid off) and have got a mortgage to build our own house.
So a short answer to your question, your uk credit rating has no bearing on getting credit in Australia. Be carefull tho as the reason you got in debt in the first place was by obtaining credit too easily.
Also to further on Horace's point. It depends on what type of Visa you migrate on as to whether you need to prove you have sufficient funds. We managed to save $6k (Aus) before we emigrated due to living with relatives for 4 months. We never had to provide proof of funds to anyone. We opened a bank account from the UK in Australia (while I was on DMP) obviously this was just a basic account
If you want any further info dont hesitate to PM me. Good Luck Australia rocks!0 -
