Whats the cheapest way to get around London?

Hi,
We are going to London on saturday for 7 days (2 adults and 2 children), i am looking at which is the cheapest way to get around London.
Would i be better off getting a 1 day travelcard each day for the 4 of us or would an oyster card work out cheaper?
Is there a cheaper way that ive missed out on?
thanks in advance!!

    walking would be cheapest :D

the Oyster card would only be cheaper if the daily value of your journeys came to less than the cost of the travelcard.

    You're wrong there.

With an Oyster card you pay for the individual journeys and there is a daily price-cap of 50p less than the cost of the travelcard.

What age are the children? I think under 12s go free

My girls are 10 and 8, so i think they will be free.
Im hoping to walk to some places but will also be doing some by tube/bus so im now thinking an oyster card is the way forward???

Your OH can only use his pass on buses.

So if you are going to stick to buses a daily bus pass for you is (I think) £3.80. A zones 1-2 off peak travelcard for all modes of travel is £5.50.

    sorry £5.60 - typo

If you can be bothered you can save 50p a day on those prices by getting a PAYG Oyster card. You will have to pay a £3 deposit - which you can get back along with any unused money on it when you leave.

Thanks for that dzug. probably one of the travelcards.
not keen on the tube but went to london for the day earlier on in the year and loved riding on the buses. Using the tube we would have had more time at the wheel area (which we didnt need) and missed all the lovely sights and sounds.

If you are going to be in London for more than 4 days then the cheapest option is a 7 day Zone 1-2 Travelcard. If you buy it at a train station booking office then you can also use the offers on https://www.daysoutguide.com.

The children being under the age of 11 can travel free as long as they are with an adult

If you really want to cut costs, a 7 day bus pass is 13.80 for each adult, and the children will go free.

I don't like the buses, I would much rather use the tube, walk or ride.

A lot of central London is amazingly close together so walking is nice as you will be constantly walking past landmarks etc.

I think on another MSE thread someone mentioned they bought the open top bus tickets which also gave them a tour on a boat on the Thames for £10 worth of Tesco Vouchers which is a lot cheaper than if you pay in cash. They said it was a great day out (Spent around 5 hours on it) and good value (You can jump on and off the open top buses at tourist spots)
