Just like credit meters they still need to read them to see how much you are using and this is tallied up with your payments.

And they are also checking that the meters have not been bypassed. The visit is more a deterrent than an actual check

    Hi Before Hollywood,

This is not a silly question at all, don't worry.

It is perfectly normal for ScottishPower (or any other supplier for that matter) to want to read a customer's prepayment meter.

We are legally bound to carry out a visual inspection of the meter, which includes taking a reading at least once every 2 years. Most suppliers will attempt to do this more often though, to ensure the customers billing record is correct.

I know you were reluctant to call us, but there's absolutely no need to be, however if you would like me to have a look at your accounts feel free to PM me the details if you need some reassurance.

thanks mate, i didnt want to appear foolish as i only bought the house 3 months ago and have no idea how prepayment works, i just like knowing how much money i have at the end of the month with no big bills.

i dont have my account number as i am at work, do you need the account/card number or other details?

There's nothing foolish about being concerned over your energy costs and we are here to help in any way we can.

If you want to send me a PM with your account number when you get home I will look into your accounts and make sure everything is in order.

I am sure it will be, but it does not harm to double-check and give you some piece of mind. Having moved into a new place recently I am sure you have enough on your mind as it is.
