Is 512Mb of RAM likely to be sufficient for most users? Dell laptops are shipping with 3Gb of RAM - although admittedly they have Vista, not XP.Thanks to all who post constructively.

Supplied with a 30 Day RTB Warranty0

Getting more RAM for it should be cheap. A 1GB stick is around £10 for laptops. Not sure about his particular model though.0

512MB will run OK with XP at least for basic tasks. If you start to add applications and like to have many windows open you're going to notice though. If anyone can confirm that adding RAM is easy it would be worth knowing.0

My neighbour has asked me to order her this but before I do is there any better deals around that anyone knows of for the price as she is at her limit that she can afford with this one...She wants its for just simple msn emails facebook etc etc as she's not into gaming etc..
Thanks in advance0 -
Upgrading memory is easy and cheap.
The processor is a bit slow, but acceptable.
The issue for me would be the 40GB hard disk (an iTunes library, a few movies, and it's full); I suppose you could get an external USB drive for around £60 or so.
But memory plus extra disk is another £100 on the price.
I suppose you could look at it from the perspective of being an alternative to a netbook?
Also, what does "refurbished" mean; as far as I can see it means it's been given a wipe and had a new OS image installed.0 -
Add £100 cost to this laptop for needed spec improvements and personally I don't think this is a great deal. The 90 warranty would put me off, tbh. I got my son a brand new laptop last week from, of all places, Comet! OK, not an HP (i know they have a great rep for laptops), it's an emachines (who are Acer in disguise, BTW). Because we had a 10% voucher we got it for £252 net, less £8.82 cash back from one of the 100% cash back sites (refuse to single one out).
Even without the 10% discount this is £280 less £11-odd cash back. It has 2gb RAM, a 160GB HDD and 15.6" screen, and, of course, full 12 months warranty.

Edit: Actually, i'm going to have to single one out, lol! If you check topcashback there's also a further 3% off code on anything over £150 so another £8.40 off! net price is approx. £260. Very decent deal. Cheaper than bringing this laptop up to spec?Call me Carmine....
HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??0 -
Well, OP is looking for a cheap laptop. Some solutions are best if you have a minimal budget and modest uses planned (or it is a 2nd/kids homework machine). Plenty of other threads elsewhere for the ideal value for money laptop.0

Basic office type tasks (using openoffice), and web browsing? Probably nigh on perfect. The *only* thing I'd have reservation over is the 30 day warranty, and might bung in another 512Mb module from CeX.co.uk for £6 if I wanted to do more than browsing and using openoffice.
It irritates me when people say "ah but it hasn't got this and that, and for x you can get such and such". But not everyone has or wants to spend x, or indeed needs something that sophisticated (even if that is quite basic by today's standards). Even £50 more, say, is almost 1/3 of the price.
My dad's laptop has died today - an N610C of lower spec. I'm tempted to just buy a motherboard for £50 or so because that's all it and he needs; you could argue that he should just get another machine. The thanks button is here to the right. If you find a post saves you money, gives you useful information, or you agree with it, take a second to thank the poster!
