Format disc for Eeepc?

Hi techies,
My daughter got a free Eeepc with a deal that Orange were doing earlier this year. It now needs reformatting as there is a problem with it probably caused by a virus. The problem is she has lost the disc and when she contacted support they wanted proof of purchase date via Orange. Next problem her ex partner took the contract out, they are no longer friends and she therefore has no way of providing proof. Can anyone suggest anywhere online that may supply this disc - I have searched but to no avail.
Many Thanks
Sandra

That will depend on what Operating System it uses - Eees are shipped with either Windows XP or Linux, and the hard disk format is different for each.
If the former, there's no easy genuinely legal solution - but one or two dodgy ones.
If Linux, it probably had Linpus installed, which you can get free, either as a complete download or as a recovery CD, here:

Apparently, a better solution than Linpus is the Ubuntu Netbook Remix, and that can also be downloaded for free.0 -
Download Windows 7 free and works until July/August 2010. Gets the laptop running until you another hiccup or you locate the install disc

Will Windows 7 run on an Eee in a usable fashion? If so, credit to MS, as I don't think Vista will.
Incidentally, looks like I was wrong about Linpus (perhaps that was used on another similar netbook?). Seems that the Eee linux variants were all based on Xandros, which you can't find for download so easily.
However, I'd go with the Ubuntu netbook OS, as she will probably get better performance with that than anything else.0 -

Many thanks - it was running on Windows XP so this would be a good option but not sure it is up to the required specs from the Windows site:- 1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
- 1 GB RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
- 16 GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit)
- DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

If your Eee (which one?) came with Xandros pre-installed you'd have had no trouble with viruses in the first place. In all likelihood you've got Windows XP, so you'll need an original installation disc in order to repair it.
If you've got some time on your hands, try a Linux distribution or three. You're sure to find something suitable somewhere, and it won't cost you a penny.
Note: I installed Windows 7 on my Eee 900 once. It looked pretty and ran rather well, but none of the function keys worked and it took ages to shut down. I've been using Ubuntu NBR ever since...0 -
Why don't you post the problem with the virus so you can get advice on removal? Only with really severe infections do you need to reinstall the OS (though it can sometimes be quicker). No free lunch, and no free laptop

Windows 7 works just fine on my little Samsung netbook, because -TangleFoot- does not know how to engage a few extra drivers he/she wants you to use Ubuntu,,,er noooooooo..and installs in 20 mins or so, thats pretty fast.0

Your little Samsung netbook has a superior processor and graphics chipset, not to mention a proper HDD.totalsolutions wrote: »Windows 7 works just fine on my little Samsung netbook0
