    How very true. It is a VERY volatile market.

    I used to work in a recruitment firm (I worked in finance). One month a guy got paid £12500 after tax after a particularly good month. 6 months later he had been sacked for missing his targets 3 months in a row. Basic pay is usually erm, basic (anywhere from £12-£15k) and it ALL comes down to how much you sell.

    Also bear in mind that the standard working hours were 8am to 6pm at our office, but many didn't leave the office til well after 8pm, worked at home at weekends, and then had company phones to continue making their calls once they were home. You don't make loads of money for just chilling out behind a desk from 9 til 5...

    Tips for the interview - be confident, ridiculously confident. Speak clearly, friendly and own the interview. Selling is a natural skill. You can be trained to an extent but I personally believe it's one of those things you're born with (or not!). It's not a job - it's a lifestyle.

    Candidates are only a product in the recruitment process and the only people who ever matter are the CLIENTS who pay!

    For every job vacancy you manage to pick up you'll find 100+ suitable candidates in this climate to pick from.
  • Depends on the sector, but i get where you're coming from. However I disagree with your wording as candidates do matter.

    Recruitment is tough, fast paced, and mainly results orientated. These are attributes in the commercial business world, and can teach valuable skills. This is not harsh, it is reality.

    Not so sure about "valuable" skills, I guess it depends on what you are looking for in a job and future career.

    I'm not trying to say that 'people' don't matter.

    I was merely pointing out that he shouldn't approach the interview talking about how wonderful candidates are and how you should maintain relationships with them when the business focus is usually on the client.
