We recently took out a subscription with Sky for tv, phone and broadband and decided to cancel our services from Virgin. After being messed about by Sky on the broadband side and discovered that we weren't actually going to get what we were told when we joined them we quickly cancelled them under the cooling off period and went back to Virgin.
I emailed Sky's customer relations department and have replies from them saying that we would be refunded our initial charge of £55 and would not receive any further charges.
Today I received a letter basically saying that if we didn't rejoin Sky we would be charged £148.48 for canceling our subscription.
Fortunately I was rather grumpy this morning anyway and wasn't in the mood for being fobbed off by idiots so I have spoken to them and been told that we got the letter because of mis-communication between departments and didn't actually have to pay anything.
The letter was quite threatening and went on about breach of contract and threatened several times that if we didn't rejoin them within 7 days we would be charged.
I feel sorry for anyone who has received the same thing and wonder how many people have actually paid because of this.

Your problem highlights one of the most annoying things about big companies: the left hand never seems to know what the right is doing! Crossed letters in the post, lots of different phone numbers to ring... If it's all supposed to be computerised I would have thought that makes it simpler - everyone who works there logs in and sees up-to-date info.
Fortunately whenever I've had a crossed wires type of problem, the person at the other end of the phone has sorted it out quickly.I used to have my Avon turnover (sales) here. They've been removed because it's not appropriate to talk about those kinds of sales as if they're realistic for a new Rep to aim for.I signed up at the right time, right place, and was very lucky.
