line rental

I am one of the 5% who can't get broadband, but live 3 miles from people who can, I am annoyed that I have to pay the same line rental as they do.
is there a way to speed up getting broadband to our village?
:(
no debts

  • The other way of looking at is that they pay the same line rental as you, for a cable that is 3 miles shorter..

Since your line rental pays for the upkeep of the local network, you are getting a better deal than they are. Broadband has nothing to do with the line rental.

Are you on the same exchange as the others you mention? If you are, and you've had a BT visit (i.e. they have tried to provide broadband but it was not possible) then that is the end of the story, you're not getting it.
On the other hand if it's just that your exchange is not enabled then you could have a look at the expected activation dates on adslguide.org

Bear in mind that some exchanges will simply not be viable, BT has been a private company for over 20 years and has a duty to shareholders to make sensible financial decisions. It's for the same reasons that not all places have a bus service, train station, mains gas etc.

A friend of mine used this trick in darkest Perthshire.

Get your phone book out and start registering the neighbourhood as interested in Broadband to get it above the critical level faster.

    8) :P :-*
  • As Hintza suggested, start a door knocking campaign!

Bt count the number of people in an area who register an interest in broadband.. However by registering an interest they aren't committing themselves to taking it out. Just get all your neighbours to write to BT requesting that broadband is made available. Once they get enough letters then you will have broadband activated.
  • You don't need to petition BT anymore. They are rolling out broadband to everyone. They have a list on their site stating when it will arrive in your village.
