I have recently fitted a new SATA hard drive (Windows XP SP3) but now when I first boot up, it get a disk error messge. I reboot and go into the BIOS where there is no hard drive shown. When I click on the SATA drive and hit "Enter" it says" New Device detected, please reboot" and when I do so, it boots normally. This only happens when switching on after the computer has been off overnight. This suggests a botherboard battery problem, as suggested to me in a previous post, so I replaced it, but still have the problem. I did post this before but can't find the thread now. Can anyone help please?

  • If it was a motherboard battery problem you would also have a problem with the clock. Although obvious to say did you press the key to save the bios config, F10 I think? Is SATA enabled in the bios? Does the bios support SATA?
If you think it will take more than 3 hours to fix a software problem it is probably quicker to reinstall windows. 30 mins to install windows, 2½ hours to reinstall all your nice software

If it is an XP machine then SATA may have been in its infancy when this mainboard was produced. If you have SATA 1 and have to fit a jumper on the drive its a virtual certainty this is so but even if it is SATA 2 it could still be early code.

My advice would be to try and find a BIOS firmware update because it should be capable of autodetecting the drive without all this hassle and you shouldn't need to have to save.

It is a new ASUS motherboard, so can't understand why this happens. Only happens if the computer hasbeen hibernating or switched off for a couple of hours.

What size hard drive. what make of drive, how new, 3months 6months, less, check the motherboard manual does it support sata2 aka 300, if not you may need to use the jumper to make it 150 = Sata1, small note, some harddrives dont have jumpers you have to set it via software, samsung is one of them.
What is the model of the motherboard.

It's anew 250gb hard drive, bought from Maplin, don't know make as my computer man fitted it. It's an Asus m/b new about 6 months ago. He thinks it might need a BIOS update as the present BIOS may not be recognising the hard drive automatically. Anyway,he came to take it away (in a white coat lol) and as I'm going away for a couple of weeks, he can check it all out. Thank goodness for my laptop and netbook.:j
