Hi bought a friends bed, its a muji one not sure if I'm allowed to say that. Anyway looks great has wooden slats, but woke up with really stiff back. Is there anything i can do to make bed less firm, my back is mega unhappy.
Tried to read bed threads but hours later still not sure what to do.

Hi, we had the same problem. I like a firm bed but in the past year or so I've found our new mattress too firm. We now have a good quality mattress topper on, we were actually given a feather one from my Mum as they no longer wanted it and it means we now have a lovely firm mattress but just with a bit of comfort on top. You can get mattress toppers in memory foam too and I've heard good things about them as well.0

I bought myself new pillows and that has helped me no end. I was suffering for quite a while after we bought a new bed and I like my beds firm! They made virtually an instant difference - the lack of support around my neck was really affecting my back.
I bought two different types and use the best combination for me of the four of them on the bed - whatever suits me - H never notices (half the time he seems to be under the pillows anyway)

Go to Ikea & get a mattress topper.0

What sort of mattress do you have? that is probably the key. We have a Muji slatted bed and the slats aren't 'sprung' like our previous slatted bed but haven't really noticed a huge difference. Have a pretty standard John Lewis mattress and a feather mattress topper thing.0

How long have you had the bed, and did it come with a satisfaction guarantee?
If you have had it too long for the above, then a topper may help. However don't get one from Ikea unless your bed is a continental size, as they won't fit UK size beds.0 -
Thanks everyone, I seem to have a hit and miss ability to retrieve responses and thought no one had read it! The slats aren't sprung and I've ended up moving it to my roommates bed til I figure out next move. I was in agony with it. I'll look for memory foam but best quote I've had is about £190 which seems very steep for synthetic stuff from China. Been told it has to be 7 inches to have effect, well that will look ridiculous!Flying Donkeys- Do no harm to others and you will benefit in more ways than one.0

No guarantees and its been pretty much unused to date. :rotfl:Flying Donkeys- Do no harm to others and you will benefit in more ways than one.0 -
What kind of mattress is it on the bed? If it's a basic flat foam mattress, you may be better off getting a whole new, decent sprung mattress than just putting a topper on top of something poor quality.0

You can get feather type mattress toppers - try QVC. It is a bit like a couple of thick duvets on top of the mattress so you could give that a go to see what you think. I think with the slats, rather than a sprung base, it will always be a bit firm no matter what you do. I'm sure you could get memory foam cheaper than you've been quoted - have you tried online? I got a superb replacement mattress for a good price from an e-bay store a couple of years ago. However, I did a lot of research first and tried out a number of mattresses in a local bed store first to decide which one I wanted. That might be your best idea. Go down to one of the bed warehouse places and work out what would be best then do some comparison shopping online. Only thing I found though is that exactly the same beds and mattresses get sold in different retailers with different names which makes it difficult to comparison shop.0

To start with, only buy a British made mattress. There are many cheap imports from China that are poor quality, don't come up to British standards, and some actually contain dangerous chemicals.
You seem to be missing the point completely with memory foam. The memory foam is actually very expensive to produce, and should be a layer of 2" on top of a layer of springs or reflex foam.
How deep did you want your mattress to be?
What was the make and model of the mattress you bought?0
