Re the scaffolding - "we'll get it from somewhere, don't worry" was my husband's reply which makes perfect sense as we are getting skips, diggers etc organised via friends and family.
 Ooh, you do realise scaffolding is costly don't you & will likely add a few hundred to the final bill? Scaffolding for my roofing works cost me an extra £700 due to limited rear access to the rear of my terraced cottage. The first quote the roofer got was for £900, but he said it was way, way too much so contacted another couple of people in an effort to get me the lowest price. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Wages differ all over the country however a good skilled roofer with all the correct qualifications experience and insurance will be around the £160 a day cost.
Really what you should be doing is working out what king of roof you are going to have then make sure he knows how to install it, get references I find that customers don’t arks for references.
If he is going to heat on the roof make sure his insurance covers him, most builders and roofers, may have the insurance in place but because they don’t carry out the work with the correct registered fire extinguishers in place their insurance is not valid!0 -
skilled people risking their lives...
Surely he shouldn't be risking his life!
A few basic safety precautions should counter that....shouldn't it!!!"We act as though comfort and luxury are the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about” – Albert Einstein0 -
Thanks steve, I will ask about the insurance and the fire extinguishers - I would never have thought of that!
Very true Clive - if you approach this logically - but if you are at all afraid of heights it does seem very much like they are risking their lives. I once had two guys try and rebuild my chimney having to come back three times because the wind and rain were conspiring to push them off the roof. They finally finished when it was "just" windy and for once I did not begrudge the money!0 -
If he is real roofer, snap his hand off...you wouldnt get that from us0
-
Why? Whose hand anyway?0

You should be budgeting approx £200 per day for a good roof tiler and approx £120 for a labourer.
Skips are approx £150 each.
Scaffold should cost approx £10 per square metre (measure the width and height of the walls then multiply togther).
The clay pantiles will costs approx £9 per square meter (new).
Fixing clay pantiles is more techincally challenging than concrete so the roof will take longer to install.
A standard size domestic house (65m2) would take approx 2-2.5 days to strip and re-tile for a 2 man gang. The existing concrete tiles and the timber battens can be recycled if you keep them seperated from the general waste.
Remember all figures are approx. Shop around but try to use someone recommended by a friend / relation, there are a lot of "roofers" out there.Keep smiling,
