Second Chance offers on ebay?!

Just had an auction finish on a skirt, and shortly afterwards I received an email from the winning bidder saying he had bought it for his wife and he had got the wrong size (skirt I am selling is size 12, she is apparently a 14). He said would I consider offering this as a second chance offer to the next bidder and I replied I would do this. Have offered it to the next bidder now at their slightly lower price (they have not responded yet), but on my ebay summary it still shows I am waiting for payment on the higher price and that the winning bidder is the first chap, but the item is down as 'buy it now' on the revised lower price. Hope that make sense!!

Doesn't offering it as a second chance 'cancel out' the original buyers winning bid? As a relative ebay newbie, should I be wary or concerned about any of this? Sorry if these seem like silly questions!

No, the first buyer is the 'only' buyer. If the second chance offer is taken up you will have sold it twice and incurred two sets of fees. To claim the first fees back you must file a dispute, either a mutual agreement to cancel the first buyer (for this they must agree) or an unpaid item dispute.
The latter leaves you open to possible negative feedback, the former leaves you open to not getting your fees back.

Thanks -although crikey this now sounds complicated! As I'm still waiting for the second buyer to respond, do I file the dispute now, or wait until I have a 'definite' sale? Judging by the original buyer's email I think we'll have a mutual agreement to cancel it (maybe I'm too naive!). Am I getting a bit premature on all this as the auction only ended a couple of hours ago!!

    Thanks!

    Why go mutual?

It's not your fault they changed their mind is it?!

Hmmm. Yes. Very good point! Think I might have been a bit too trusting of what they said and just agreed to it too soon. Still, i have filed a 'dispute' saying it's mutual and will see what they say whilst in the meantime waiting for the second bidder to confirm if they will still buy at the slightly lower price.

Think I've learned some lessons today!

    Thanks

If buyer refuses the mutual or ticks the wrong box you lose your FVFs.

How long did you put on the second chance offer, I find they either go in the first few hours or not at all. If it doesn't go on the SCO you will have to pay to relist it again.

  • Thought I'd give you an update on this after all your handy advice. I filed a 'dispute' with ebay, but marked it as a mutual decision between me and the buyer to cancel the sale. The buyer agreed to this so FVF have been refunded and I received payment from the second buyer who I offered it to as second chance. So all in all I think it has ended well, although let that be a lesson to me - I could have just as easily stuck to my guns with buyer 1 and insisted they paid, however I suspect they might have dragged their heels on paying and maybe even left me neutral or worse still negative FB.

All's well that ends well though and I'm pleased it's all been resolved so quickly.

Thanks again everyone for your advice last night.
  • As a seller there is nothing you can really do except get your fees back. Ebay have made it all for the buyer as a seller cannot leave any negative feedback anymore. I have recieved 4 negatives from a buyer for filing an unpaid item dispute and leaving strikes. It's a good job i have over 12000 feedback so it doesn't affect me. You are better being amicable to avoid receiving bad feedback.
