That's not too bad then especially as you are just starting out probably have lots of other expenses. Good Luck!

...and the OP could always take the view that the TV is a luxury, not an essential, and spend the money on something else.....

I have paid my licence by quarterly for over ten years.

What happens if you move house? Do you have to pay another 6 months upfront?
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.

The NTVLRO live in a world of their own. I don’t know anyone else who gets away with this sort of charging scheme.

On the basis of (hopefully) selling up and moving away in the next few months, I cancelled my DD last month as I’d finished paying for my current licence.

When you move home, you just inform TV Licensing and they transfer the license to your new address. They do not issue a new license with your new address until renewal time.

also, your first year's licence actually won't be for a year. we made the mistake of applying for ours on the 30th of the month, to find that we had paid a full year's cost, but our licence only lasted for 11 months and 1 day. moral of the story is to apply for it on the 1st of the month i suppose.

Yes! I didnt know this and got mine on 22nd and lost 22 days since they go from the 1st of the month.

I just gave them a call to give new address and they simply transferred the licence to the new address -- no change in payment.

We pay the whole amount once a year as it's cheaper, think that's still the case.

the monthly direct debit costs the same as the annual lump sum. Only if you do it quarterly will it cost more (an extra £5 per year)

From the MSE perspective the monthly option makes more sense since you when you renew in later years only pay out 1/12th of the cost when you get your licence, instead of the whole cost up front on day one. You can then earn interst on the rest of the money in a savings account

that's cost you an extra £50 then  or nearly 1/3rd of the cost of an annual licence
