IN SIMPLE TERMS!!
Please can someone tell me what I need to get if I want to put all my photos and emails etc some where they'll be safe if my computer has to be reformatted or something.
Is it a memory stick thing? and whats the cheapest

do you have a CD or DVD writer, they are safer, and cheaper..
If you want to do a full backup of the PC ( including Windows, all files, all settings), Norton Ghost is the best thing to get (it's about £30), but you will need a writer of some sort to use it..

I have a cd writer, It's just personal stuff I want to make sure I don't lose, do you have any idea how many photos or emails fit on a cd0

700 megabytes worth. photos aren't a fixed size, so I can't give you a number.
usb flash drives are better than nothing, and you can get a 1GB for £30 or so nowadays, but they are electronic, so can break or get corrupted (esp if you pull them out too early), and are easily lost. cd's are a more reliable backup medium, and at about 17p each, enable you to do multiple copies cheaply, in case one gets damaged
search the forum for outlook backup for tips on backing up your emails
