Need Advice on MOT

Hi everyone I have a car which is a 56 plate and was regitared on the 7-9-06 I have had the car since last september, so I know the MOT is due before the 7-9-09, but can I book it in like a nomal MOT up to 30 days in advance, and if so what do I need to take along because before you used to take the old MOT certificate but of course I dont have one yet being a new car.

Thank you for any advice.

Oh I am looking to book the car in this weekend 8-8-09 or next 15-08-09 But I want the MOT dated from the 7-9-09 but I will be away at this time so cant take it in then.

Just to bump, as I have same question - my vehicle was registered 1st Sept 06 so needs its first MOT then - can I get it MOT'd this month but get it dated from 1st Sept as I would if it already had MOT - have searched internet for info but to no avail. TIA.

Its all done on the computer now so you don't need an old MOT cert to get it date forward and it will be the same for a car having its 1st MOT they know when it is due and will date it from then.

A cars first M O T will run from the date it is done. No matter when it was first registered.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Are you sure? Can you give a link?

This question is raised periodically on here and I seem to recall you could still do 30 days in advance providing you MOT'd it within 30 days of the third anniversary of the first registered date. Before that and it would run from the date tested (as does any MOT done more than 30 days before expiry of the previous one).

Best advice to the OP is 'Ask the testing station'.

The formatting is a bit messed up as a second question is attached but here:
    PREMATURE MOT
My car is 3 years old on 12/03/05. Can I submit the car for MOT Test before this date? R.T.Fenwick

The answer is yes provided you take the registration documents with you when you go for an MOT. MOTT

Also this cached version of Northern Ireland direct.gov.uk site (original no longer available for some reason but was copyrighted 2009:
Can an MOT be carried out at any time?
If the vehicle is tested within 28 days prior to when the MOT is due, the test certificate will run from the date of the test to one year after the expiry date of the current certificate. For example, if the current certificate was due to expire on 1 April 2009, and the vehicle was presented on or after 4 March 2009, the certificate would run from the test date until 1 April 2010.
The same rule would also apply when the vehicle is taken in within 28 days of its first MOT. In this case, the vehicle owner would need to present their registration document.
If the vehicle is tested earlier than 28 days before its due date, the MOT will only run for twelve months.

    Also here:
A MOT test can be taken up to a month before the due date and if the old certificate, or registration document in the case of the first MOT, is presented at the test, the certificate will be issued from the due date rather than the earlier test date.

Edit: MOT tests in Northern Ireland are not computerised (or at least don't use the same computer database as England, Wales & Scotland)

From the above links, having the test performed on 8 Aug may be an issue as the NI link suggests 28 days in advance only, but 15-Aug shouldn't be a problem.

To clarify, the test will run from and be dated the date of the actual test, but will expire on 06-Sept-2010 if you comply with the requirements for the delayed expiry date :)

Edit: you should be fine with either weekend - it is indeed possible to have the test taken up to 1 month before the expiry of the existing period for testing in England, Scotland or Wales, as per the links above (not the Northern Ireland one), and still have the later expiry date
