laying new laminate flooring

i have just finished painting my kitchen, and i want to finish if off properly with new laminate flooring.
i'm willing to try and lay it myself, i'm going to try and buy the best i can afford, but does anyone have any advice on how to go about it.
i've asked friends, and one says start from the furthest away and work back and another says work from the middle outward, so i'm confused.
