I notice in Asda today they sell DVD players with a HDMI output facility for £30!! (also has a scart for those who dont have a HDMI connection).

DAK if a DVD playeer with HDMI cable gives much better picture quality using a HDMI vs scart?

Also seen they sell some DVD players with 1080 upscaling feature..again if any one with some tech experience can tell me if they are worth buying?

It's an all-digital path, so in theory it should be better. How much is debatable and depends on how much of an hifi nut you happen to be.

Only if the scaler built into the DVD player is a better scaler than the one built into your TV. This will vary depending on the individual players and TVs involved.

i have no idea what is the scaler is on my plasma Tv....
just wondering if its worth buying one of these type of DVD players...anyone tried one?
  • HDMI should theoretically give a better picture than scart. I bought a Toshiba DVD player with HDMI and 1080P upscaling. The difference in picture quality isn't huge, but is noticeably better than my previous player. Hope this helps. Regards.

Well, I just use a PC with a BluRay drive to do the same job, since the scaler built into the PC is much better than in my Panasonic PZ700 TV, and yes it does look very nice when scaled. (Though occasionally subtitles look odd as these can be tricky to scale)

However, with Sky HD, the scaler in that isn't as good as the Panasonic one, so it looks better if you turn off the upscaling and let the TV do it.

This is why you can't get a straight answer. Especially since you haven't said what TV you have.

This is dependant on a few things ~
First ~ thats a CHEAP dvd player so it will lose quite a bit of information before its sent down the HDMI
The dvd player you have now might be a far better quality one which means there probably wont be much in it?
LGs arent known for their scalers so id guess youd be far better finding a half decent upscaling player

Asda did have some other branded DVD players with upscalers and HDMI outputs for under £50 as well.......guess its worth getting one of these and giving it a try. My current DVD player is just an cheap one i bought years ago..got to admit its produces reasonable picture quality.
    cheers

I got one of the cheap HDMI DVD players from Aldi, and it's a noticeable difference. OK, it's not properly high definition (you couldn't expect that), but it does give a great picture
