iPod video - battery and sound quality

Options
I bought an ipod video from boots a couple of months back and I'm not very impressed with a) how long the battery lasts, and b) the sound quality.

I see that iPod claims that the battery lasts up to 14hrs - now I'm not expecting 14hrs playback, but I've been listening for about 2hrs now from fully charged, and it doesn't look like I'm going to get more than about 5 (maybe 6)hrs from it.

Also not overly impressed with the sound quality of the music on it. All the music I have on it is from my own CDs (via iTunes) or a famous MP3 site that we're not allowed to mention.

Am I expecting too much from the machine? Shoudl I just sit back and enjoy what I've got out of it, or for almost £200 should I be expecting more.

The annoying this is that I can't compare against someone else's so I don't know if mine is playing up/broken...

    Re the battery

Have you let it run down fully yet?

While it's true that Ipod batteries don't suffer from the memory effect that Nicads do, the battery meter isn't accurate until it has been emptied. The Ipod needs to know where empty is so it knows better when it's approaching it.

it's run right down once but then again, nearly an hour later the battery status is the same as it was.....

I'm off away for 4 months and wanted to make sure it's not bust b4 I went. I might just leave it playing and find out just how long it does last.....

No. It's better not to let Lion batteries fully discharge.

As it says in the link:

[font=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif] Although lithium-ion is memory-free in terms of performance deterioration, batteries with fuel gauges exhibit what engineers refer to as "digital memory". Here is the reason: Short discharges with subsequent recharges do not provide the periodic calibration needed to synchronize the fuel gauge with the battery's state-of-charge. A deliberate full discharge and recharge every 30 charges corrects this problem. Letting the battery run down to the cut-off point in the equipment will do this. If ignored, the fuel gauge will become increasingly less accurate.
