payment before repairs carried out

Hi,
I am in the process of trying to get my upvc front door fixed. Today a double glazing repair company came round and quoted £88 which I am happy to pay but I was asked to pay the man who gave me the quote by credit card straight away and the repair team would come this afternoon. I wasn't happy to pay before the repair was carried out but I was told it was company policy and I would receive a refund if the door couldn't be repaired.
Is it me or does this sound a bit odd? I questioned it and he told me that they were having trouble getting paid from some people in this climate and said I would be covered by my credit card anyway if there were any problems with me getting a refund.
I told him I would think about it. Do you think this is normal practice to pay before the work is carried out?

If you look under the heading 'is this quote fair' theres a similar thread about builders wanting deposits, which isn't really normal, so paying the full amount before a job is complete doesn't sound right, also £80 is a small amount of money for a company to risk losing a job over, i'd get quotes else where.

Only if they've got a lower limit than the statutory £100 before s75 kicks in.

Don't even think about paying up front. Reputable companies don't behave like that.

I paid £120 to have my front door repaired but only after the man had finished the job. He had to buy the part up front himself.

You wouldn't be covered by your CC for under £100.
