What is the legal liability of National Rail Inquiries for advice they give out either via the web or by phone?

Yesterday I nearly received a Panalty Fare as a result of taking a train which they stated I could but the onboard train staff insisted I couldn't:mad:

Only avoided by getting off the train at the next stop and waiting an hour!!!

Ta for that - what about their (premium rate) phone service - I have never seen any T&Cs posted for that.....

Ah a phone call.
What proof have you got of what you were told?

I would suggest (in future) that it might be a good idea to use their website, and then at least you can print off their suggestions. If you then show your print to the guard/train manager/conductor they may be inclined to believe you.
