I have yet to understand what GMail is I am a little slow on the brain cells can anyone explain to me why I might need one and what are the features and benefits

The main and best reason is not to tie yourself the the email provided by your ISP so your free to move company if you wish.
Unlike hotmail etc with Gmail you can forward your emails to the email address provided by your ISP.
Basically its a free email for life.

I'm sure one of my gmail accounts has gone mad, it has 50 invites to give away, normally it only goes to 4.
