Using Credit Cards Abroad

Is it common knowledge that if you use your credit card abroad you get charged 2.75% extra on all purchases and if use your credit card to buy currency then you get charged 2.75% and 2% for the cash transaction ? I found this out today by ringing Barclaycard and Morgan Stanley. Does anyone know a card that charges alot less ?
