I gave a lower reading then they estimated but ended up with a higher bill !

I had my electric bill from Eon and on the 5th July they gave me an estimated reading of 66057 I had not paid this bill. I rang them today to give them an actual reading as of the 3rd Aug which was 65995 which is lower than the estimate. I assumed my bill would be lower because I had actually used less electricity but when they recalculated the bill on today's lower reading my bill ended up being £4 more !

They explained it by saying that they look at the billing periods and as I was giving a reading today units from July 5th to now fell under the primary tariff. After thinking about it the only way they can workout what units fell into the new period billing period is to 'guess' what my actual reading was on the 5th July based on the reading I gave today, but they wouldn’t tell me this. They claimed all energy companies did this and it was because they didn’t bill a standing charge... but it seems wrong to me, how can I have used less electricity then they estimated but end up with a higher bill !!! ???? In the end I told them to go with the estimated reading as it was cheaper and appeared to give me some credit as there estimated reading were higher.

Seems to me now that when you give a correct reading you need to tell them its for the date they estimated it or it will cost you. Is this some kind of EON trick or do they all do it ?

There is no trick, and they probably did not explain it too well.

As the reading is a month past the original bill, they can charge for more primary units. You get this back at the next bill, because you will already have paid for the primary units for July.

    Hi JustTakeAllMyMoney,

As DVardysShadow says, this is a result of the corrected bill covering a longer time frame.

On your E.ON tariff will have annually 900 primary units, everything you use after this is charged as secondary units. The amount you are charged is based on the days in the quarter, a typical quarter is around 91 days.

We calculate how many primary units to charge by the following calculation 900 (annual primary units) divided by 365 (days in year) multiplied by the number of days your bill covers.

If the bill was a flat 91 days you’d be charged for 225 primary units, if it covers more days the primary units increase as well. They will not however exceed 900 in the year.

So due to the re-bill you would have received, you’d pay £4 more on this bill as it covers more days, the next quarter will cover less days and in effect cost £4 less.

    Hope this helps. :)

Hi Brain may be as an EON rep you can take my case up as EON complaints seems to have put my issue in the 'file and forget' folder.

I appreciate how the bill works primary and secondary etc but there is more to my case. My last covered 300 units, I was charged these 300 units at a primary rate of just over 32p I didn't even get into secondary units ! Looking around I don't think I could of paid anymore for electricity if I had tried.

As there is hardly anyone at the property I started questioning EON back in Jan as to why my bill was so much and had gone up significantly yet usage had gone down, time line of events are as follows.

    - Jan they 'reviewed' my tariff and put me on dual fuel or at least I thought they did.

    - Next quarter I question EON again as the bill was still very high and could there be a better tariff for me they review it again but changed nothing.

-This quarter I rang up again asking for my tariff to be reviewed, they checked my tariff I wasn't on the Dual fuel even though in Jan I had been told I had been changed. From my perspective this is an EON screw up, I don't feel as the customer its my responsibility to actually check EON staff do there job correctly.

I asked for my tariff to be reviewed again as I just didn't understand why I was paying so much, this time one of your staff spotted I was on Economy 7 and that explained why my bill was so high, I asked them to take me off that and they said they had so problem sorted. I then rang 3 days later to ask another question and asked them to check if I had been taken off Economy 7, I hadn't this is even though days earlier I had been told I had been taken off it, the same thing happened with the Dual fuel may be a systems issue for EON or staff training ?

Your staff told me that the fact I was on Economy 7 which was totally inappropriate for me (no storage heaters!) should of been picked up when I first started asking them questions in Jan.

I recon I have over paid approx £150 on my bills and this is not through lack of trying to resolve the issue with EON. When I talk to your staff as nice and as helpful as they try to be they say they cant see anything on the system to back up the switching of my tariffs, but they can see I rang and queried the bills each quarter, so they put the onus on me to prove I had been infact switched tariffs how the hell am I supposed to do that ? I actually called from work and all my calls are recorded if it wasn't such a waste of my time and other peoples time I would get the recordings to prove what was discussed/

I would of liked EON to recalculate my bills backed to Jan 09 on the correct tariffs they said they put me on but didn't and also to take me off Economy 7 as in your own staffs words 'this should of been picked up at the start' When I suggested the recalculation they said they couldn't do this so I asked to long a complaint, 4 days on EON has not contacted me.

So to sum up if you use EON,

    1. Don't believe customer services have switched your tariff when they say they have, always ring back and check a couple of days later as in my experience they can't be trusted or have system issues.

    2. If you have a problem with EON don't expect it to get resolved, unless Brian can prove other wise.

    Thanks
  • Further update to this, I paid my gas bill on the 4th Aug and bank statement shows this, just logged into EON online today and I can see they switched me to dual fuel on the 11th Aug but in the process decided to ignore the fact I paid the bill on the 4th of August and add this an an outstanding amount to my bill. I could may be understand this if it was a matter of a day or two between switch but this is 7 days since you had the payment.

    I don't trust EON at all !
