Utilities cost

I'm not on a very high salary and I'm currently looking at whether I can afford to move out of my parents home. However, I need to look at how much utility bills are. I know you can't work out an exact figure for them but can anyone give me some guide prices for water, electricity and gas for 1 person either for a flat or small house? The default providers in the area are United Utilities for Water, Scottish Power for electricity (former ManWeb area) and British Gas for Gas.

BG for gas alone will be one of the most expensive ways to have your gas provided.

Try to change to an online tariff as that is were the best deals are to be had e.g. EDF 5, Eon, or BG Websaver.

If the meters are pre payment try and get credit meters installed so you can pay less than pre payment.

I don't know how practical it is to switch providers, get meters changed etc. if you are only renting. As if you move out and the landlord/lady can't rent it to someone else they'll obviously have to pay any bills to the utility companies.
