Views on deposits left for car

Just want to put this up for comment, more out of interest than anything else as it's actually the 2nd time we've had this situation when selling a car.
SIL this time, advertises his car for sale, quality, desirable car so the phone starts ringing almost immediately. Within 12 hrs he had 4 people queing up for it. Ist guy came next day, train home 40 miles from work, borrowed his parners car, and drove 125miles to view. It was exactly what he wanted, the price that we wanted was reached and he left £100 deposit and agreed to pick up at the weekend.
Meanwhile sil is keeping details of all other callers just in case. The guy ring back the following evening to say he doesn't want the car. Was there something wrong with it? we obviousley asked. The car is unmarked, untouched and mint. It seems his other 1/2 had given him some earache and he thought better to back out. Now son in law is not too savvy in these situations. He said that as long as he got the same price from another buyer, he would refund the deposit.
As said phone never stopped ringing but all calls were from distance. 2nd guy offers slightly lower price over the phone subject to it being as described, transfers £100 deposit and arranges to come and view 2 days later. Several subsequent higher offers were made so sil calls the 2nd guy and he ups his offer to that agreed with the 1st buyer. He arrives at agreed time after a 150mile train journey, couldn't fault the car but didnt want it. He was a dealer, the car didn't have air conn, (wasn't advertised as having), so he didn't want it and caught the next train back.
So so far 2 separate deposits paid, neither agreed as holding deposits, and both buyers walked away.
Anyway next day a local trader calls, a price is agreed actually £20 less than the original agreed price if you include the £200 already paid. Deal done.
No one has asked for money back and to be honest I don't expect them to, when buying a car costing £11,500 a deposit of £100 is far too little and in my view is one that both of them placed not being too worried if the deal didn't go through.
I know my views on the situation, what are yours, only sil is a little softer than me and .........;)
PS was selling a Westfield many years ago and actually took £400 in deposits 3 separate ones, berore a real buyer came along. No one pushed for their money back or even asked, too embarressed I supose

I would always insist on 10% non-refundable deposit.
If a dealer gave him almost what he was asking, he wasn't asking enough.;)0 -
As far as I am concerned, If i were to put a deposit on a car, And then back out of the sale, I wouldn't be expecting it back.
Was any receipt or paperwork given when deposit was recieved?
Either way, I wouldn't be worrying about giving back. They would have been in contact by now if they disagreed.War does not decide who is right, It decides who is left.0 -

You're both in line with my thoughts, no written word, so becomes a gentlemans agreement if my view. If one "gentleman" backs out, he wouldn't be one if he asked for his money back;)
I would also have written non refundable on any deposit, but a) it wasn't me, and b) as it was done over the phone each time it would have been a little more difficult, and thinking about it c) these guys both chucked the deposit at him

Regarding the asking price, new company car was due today so quick sale needed. Prices were checked with usual sources but mainly on pistonheads to see what similar cars were actually moving ie sold. Priced accordingly and adhered to;) so everyone happy.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
