Ipod question

I am thinking of buying my OH an Ipod for his birthday. We are new to the whole concept of this type of music listening. We are also looking at a Panasonic Hi-Fi which has an Ipod dock. My question is are the connections on the Ipod classic the same as the Nano? If the Hi-Fi specs say that it has an Ipod dock will both versions connect to it. Its a Panasonic HC3DBEB. Sorry if this seems a daft question but it`s a whole new world to me!

These 'universal' docks usually have a dock adaptor for each model of iPod which you'd need to swap over when you docked the Classic or Nano.0 -
