Hard envelopes/boxes to send old records in

Not sure if this is the right place to post this in.

My father-in-law has asked me to sell a large collection of his old LP's and EP's on eBay.
Has anyone here sold records on eBay before and knows what's the best way to post them?
Should we use hard, do not fold envelopes, to send them in and if so where can we get them cheap.

  • I tend to buy my stock from ebay:

you can also get stiffeners, which are basically the same size as a record and make the envelope more solid - but you only really need to use them if you have a flimsy envelope or are posting a long way

Wouldn't 2 pieces of strong thick cardboard with the record in between them work just as well (like a sandwich) then wrapped in brown paper?

no, it may crease and bend the corners.

the proper 12" and 7" brown cardboard record envelopes are the best. I buy a lot of vinyls and wouldn't expect any less than the professional record envelopes to be honest. I would be rather cheesed off if a record was sent between 2 sheets of card and wrapped with brown paper. Vinyl can be very tempramental. It can warp easily, or the sleeve of the record can get damaged. I request that the vinyl itself gets shipped out of the sleeve, then if it gets cramped with all the other mail, the sleeve dosen't end up with a viynl imprint on it.

you must be buying new stuff, as its extremely rare to find an older record that hasnt got the imprint on it

but i agree re: the two bits of cardboard and brown paper, it just isnt secure enough, plus its extrememly fiddly (having had to wrap similar shaped items)

some of it is new, but the majority of the records I buy from ebay are classed as rare or deleated so will have been kept in imaculate condition. I always ask the seller a few questions before I buy vinyl.
