Software Freezing PC

:o I know the first answer will be 'Ditch AOL', but I can't until my contract runs out.

Now, I am using an old machine, and have been for a few months. My other PC has no sound (Can't get it back, tried everything!), but my main concern (Other than getting my CD Drive fixed!) is that everytime I install AOL, it gets to the 'Searching for modems' bit after installation, and the PC freezes.

I can do anything else on the PC, other than alot of CD's won't work becasue of the CD drive. Some CD's do, AOL is one of them, but I get the PC freezing when I try to get it to search for modems.

Comp01 stops working, as does some other thing about messages - msgsrvr or something, and AOL stops working. It freezes the whole PC, and I can't even Ctrl/Alt/Del

I've tried deleting files I don't use to see if it's conflicting - no luck.

Pc Service Call say the sound issue is a software problem, so they won't sort out AOL prob naturally, and AOL don't wanna know.

Any advice? Please :o

Should say, i'm talking about my other PC - Windows ME, 192mb Ram, 850mhz Processor - not the old one I am using now.
