Wedding in Italy? Where? when? how?

Hello!!!!!!!

I'm new to the site so firstly, hello and............be gentle!!

I'm hoping you or someone out there can point my fiancee and myself in the right direction.

We are wanting to get married in Italy back end of 2010. Where, when and how is the major question! we dont know where to start.

I have briefly looked into it using google but when all these companies come up stating they are wedding planners and will take it all out of our hands, firstly I believe we will be ripped off and secondly surely one of the big excitments of the wedding is planning it all?

So yes we'd like to plan our wedding but then all the questions start? Where in italy? beach or mountain
How much should we budget?
We do know that there will probably only be about 15-20 people going and then we'll have a party when we get back but thats as far as we've got.

We'd love to hear from anyone who has or going to be married in Italy or infact anywhere abroad and where did you start?

Thank you!!!!!!!!!

  • Hi
I am getting married in Sorrento, Italy in May 2010. I started off emailing loads of wedding planners who all came back with really expensive packages and ended up booking through Thomson which was loads cheaper. We only want a small no fuss wedding and the Thomson package suited us perfectly.

It is possible to arrange the wedding yourself but you need to know what you are doing with regards to the paperwork as getting married in Italy requires certain documents, translators etc.
Personally I preferred to hand it all over to Thomson who have told me exactly what I need to send them and the deadlines for getting it to them. They then send everything to Italy saving me any worry.

I guess the first thing you need to decide is whereabouts in Italy you would like to get married - have you been to Italy at all? There are the obvious popular places like Sorrento, Venice, Tuscany etc depends what you are looking for as the whole country is stunning :D Also a budget is important.....

Keep us posted how you get on/what you decide to do.....

    Good luck x

I would stick with a company like Thomson to be honest with you. My friend got married in Positano in May and she had a nightmare time (she had paid a planner £4K and got diddly squat), she had to then make several trips to Italy to sort it out for herself with a little input from me as she was marrying a divorced chap. Unfortunately the Amalfi coast is ridiculously expensive so avoid that if you can. Luckily she can speak fluent Italian so she could sort out all the papers and with the help of the receptionist at the hotel sort out flowers and photographers.

Most weddings in Italy either take place in church or in the town hall.

    Hi 19tv77

My best friend got married in Italy a few years ago in Malcesine, Lake Garda in the most beautify castle overlooking the lakes - amazing! (the guests all stayed in Sermione).

As I'm a newbie I can't post links, but Google "travel counsellors, karen goldman" and she'll point you in the right direction.
    Best wins: 2012: Kindle, 2011: £250 vouchers, 2010: Monte Carlo trip, 2009: £240 :D

Hi, Firstly welcome and congratulations 19TV77!

Myself and my HTB are both scooter enthusiasts and have ridden to Italy before (Venice, Como and Pisa) and thought we would encorporate our wedding into a riding holiday. HTB has been married before and we both don't want a lot of fuss or a big wedding. After looking at different areas we have decided that we would like to get married with a civil ceremony in Positano (the town hall balcony has a stunning view of the sea)

I have gotten as far as looking at some of the wedding planner services on offer but only really need them to book the ceremony sort out the paperwork and provide an interpreter.

Can anyone recommend a company or person that will just provide these services?

These are some of the sites I have looked at:

I would suggest Amalfi cathedral but I believe the waiting list is 7 years.

I would vote for Sorrento too - the cloisters are beautiful. I got engaged there 6 weeks ago and it's stunning. Met a young couple who were there to look at wedding venues. The Foreigners CLub would be my fave - stunning views, huge patio style restaurant! Beautiful :)

    Enjoy!
  • also would say Sorrento, not sure on foreigners club (had a bad meal there and a very surly waiter!!) but they have got some of the best views

we stayed in the Hotel Antiche Mura (just up the hill about 400yds from the main square) for our honeymoon and it was fab. we found a lovely restaurant called "la favorita o parochiano" (SP) (the priests favourite or sthg) which is along the main shopping street to the left as you walk down the hill from the hotel and into the main square, they look tiny from street level but you go up some stairs and it opens out into the most amazing restaurant in a citrus grove. one night we were there a large (think +200) wedding party was going on in half of it.

Congrats and have a lovely time wherever you go :D

I don't suggest doing it yourself, in Italy, you will need to use a planner.

    19tv77 Hi and Welcome

My brother and sister in law got married in Rome. They organised it all themselves.

As they wanted a Catholic wedding service they had help from our local priest at home here who helped organise a chapel in Rome, which was stunning and also our local priest travelled with us to officiate the service. Also because they wanted a Catholic service in particular this was the main reason for holding in Rome the papal city.

My SIL used tripadvisor and google and lots of search engines to find out what was the best hotel and for food, once she saw one she liked she emailed them for a package. The hotel was able to put her in contact with a florist and a photographer who where all fantastic and we travelled to the venues either on foot or by taxi. Infact we got taxi's from the Chapel to the Trevi fountain for photographs and then walked as a group through the streets to the hotel - some of the photographs of just the families walking through the cobbled streets of Rome where fantastic!!!

They then honeymooned in Venice and other area's without us all tagging along

we are having the same problems, trying to arrange a wedding France. trying to find the right venue is proving difficult without a wedding planner. Been on the brink of tears this week, and am about to give up and stick with the UK!
