Shepherd's pie is traditionally made using leftover lamb from the Sunday joint.I did this on Monday with our leftover Easter lamb.I chopped the meat up in the food processor.
It is generally made with fresh mince nowadays, but that's the difference - leftover meat not fresh mince.
My mum used to make cottage pie most often with minced beef.0 -
isnt mince and tatties, just mince and boiled potatoes?
whereas, shepherds pie is mashed potato?

we make our shepherds pie/cottage pie a 'surprise' pie.......cos i always put something in the mash topping to make it a surprise, eg sauteed leeks, grain mustard, sweetcorn etcwading through the treacle of life!

i think there's a lot to be said for turkey mince, especially if you are on a tight budget, as it is cheaper than 'cheap' mince (of the beef variety), but much nicer.

I used Penny Pinchers fabulous recipe which includes a tin of tomatoes and a tin of baked beans. It's so yummy.

Dunno, I'm a [STRIKE]vegetable[/STRIKE] vegetarian
I suppose my version is called veggie pie :rotfl:Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...0 -

Absolutely!! (Phew! Glad you said that thriftladyworried I was having a "moment" )
Cottage Pie - beef, usually bulked out with carrots and other l/o veggies
Not sure at which point in history fresh mince was used to make up these recipes, because a lot of traditional recipes were based on leftovers in the days when a family would buy only one joint of meat per week and that would have to be eked out throughout the week in various guises (including broths/soups).pavlovs_dog wrote:i think there's a lot to be said for turkey mince, especially if you are on a tight budget, as it is cheaper than 'cheap' mince (of the beef variety), but much nicer.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Savoury mince with mashed potatoes on the side, in ours
 Unless I make Yorkshire Mince - savoury mince served in Yorkshire pudding (no potatoes, just lots of vegetables).
Or, savoury mince with rice and peas~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I said I'd make Shepards Pie for dinner tonight  but I must be missing something????
So far I've cooked the mince and I'm boiling the tatties just now, but it's just mince and tatties set out with one on top of the other instead of side by side.
