Time limit on reclaiming PPI

I got a letter back from RBS stating that I cannot reclaim PPI on my credit card because the policy started in 1996 and as such is too far back. The policy is still running, are they correct in what they say or are they at it?
I know there is a limit on policies that have expired, but as this policy is still live do I have a case?
Cheers

Hi there Dave
I think you can try for the last 6 years though, but with one of mine, it did go as far as the FOS last year, it was resolved this year, and they were told to repay me back as far as 2001, of when I taken out the credit card, this was Lloyds tsb though.
I would write back and tell them to consider the last 6 years and if you do not require the PPI and still paying for it, then it maybe wise for you to ask to cancel this as well.
Hope this helps, but keep at them, as your still paying out for this then its well worth keeping on at them, if they do not resolve, then contact the Financial ombudsman service (FOS) if they will investigate this complaint for you, when you receive the final decision.;)
Good luck. The one and only "Dizzy Di"0 -

Your welcome Dave
I would personally write back and tell them:
"In regards of your response on your letter dated XX/XX/XXXX, you have confirmed that your unable to refund me my PPI because of the time-limit, however, due to my reasons I have already provided in regards of my complaint dated XX/XX/XXXX, I will appreciate if you would refund me the amount of PPI going back the last 6 years plus the interest, if your unable to refund me prior to this date.
If your unable to do this, I will take this case to the Financial ombudsman service (FOS) in order for them to investigate, and will also request that they look into this complaint as from 1996, or at least as from 2003, 6 years to this date".
Something like this may help them change their decision on this Dave, good luck and please ask if you require any further help with this, and of course please do write in your own words if you want to, what I have wrote above is an example.;)The one and only "Dizzy Di"0
