Dell inspiron 1300 Internet Explorer problem

I just took delivery of my Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop and I'm having problems already. I can connect to the internet with AOL using the inbuilt wifi and my Netgear wireless router with no problems but if I try opening IE to connect or run Windows update or let the McAfee trial software try and connect to register or update then I'm either told it can't access the internet or IE is not responding. I've not installed ANY new software and I'm running it as it came out of the box. I also tried the restore option just incase I'd done something without realising but still no joy!
Sorry if this is an old problem that's been mentioned before but I had a quick look and couldn't see any answer. Please help!

I don't know if this helps, but I had a similar problems. I had to call Dell tech support and spoke to a very helpful person. Turned out it was something as simple as ticking a box, but I can't for the life of me remember which box it was. It was a long the lines of 'connect automatically' as opposed to 'connect using IP address...' I'll see if I can find it again!"...IT'S FRUITY!"0

Maybe it was 'never dial a connection' in tools/internet options/connections ?0

Thanks guys. All sorted now.
I have to say though that although it wasn't Dells fault I wasn't that impressed with their customer service. I was simply told that the AOL software (that came ready installed on the Dell laptop) wasn't compatable with IE which is of course a load of nonsense.
AOL on the other hand were very helpfull and I had it sorted in under 10 minutes. I think it was possibly something to do with my router although I'm not sure exactly what fixed the problem. If any other AOL users get stuck the same way then PM me and I'll give you the info.0
