Toilet replacement quotation?

Options
Hi,

I am getting my entire toilet system (pan and cistern) replaced. I have the following quotation:

- Removal of existing w/c pan and system and discard.

- To supply and make good wall tiling behind w/c area (approx 1m sq).

- To fit vinyl floor tiles (around 6 - 8)

- To supply and fit new close coupled pan and system to same soil pipe and leave in full working order.

I am supplying the floor tiles and the ceramic wall tiles.

Total £532

Does this sound about right?

  • If you are physically able to, it is really not hard to do it yourself for a fraction of that ridiculous quote!

I did mine myself and I have no plumbing experience. It's basically turn the water off, flush the system until it's empty, unscrew the water supply pipe, unscrew and remove the toilet itself, and then do all of this in reverse!

Have a look at B&Q or Wickes or betterbathrooms.com for the toilet.

I should add, the current toilet's connection to the waste pipe is at a very odd angle. The plumber would have to take an angle grinder to it and connect it somehow. The entire toilet would also have to be brought forward from the wall by about 4-5 inches.

I don't know if that helps justify the quote, but I agree, it is slightly more than I bargained for.

And I don't think I have the confidence to tackle it all myself :(

What sort of price should I really be looking at for the work mentioned? Can the quote be broken down into parts and labour costs?

  • I can't help you on what the quote should be and how it breaks down I'm afraid. Have a look at the Wickes website for an idea of how much a toilet costs. But I had a similar problem with the connections to the waste, I made a note of the measurements and took a photo into my local plumbing supplies and they gave me the perfect connector; there are lots of many shapes and sizes!!

    Good luck!

  • That's the stuff!! I had to use the flexible one to make a sort of 's' shape, works a treat!

    Thanks guys :)

Anyone else who has been able to read this and is involved in work like this...I know it is difficult to comment on (and it seems 532 is a tad bit expensive), but what sort of price should I be paying for this work to be completed?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Changing the toilet and fitting a new one will take an hour to two max.
If there is no prep work to do, an hour for the vinyl tiles max.
Around half a day for the ceramic tiling & grouting.

The job should be priced at 1 to 1½ days labour including collecting the loo etc.
It depends how much he has spent on the toilet and fittings to get a price.

That is a lot of money to have a toilet removed and a new one fitted!

But it depends which toilet he is fitting.

You can pay a few hundred quid for a toilet or you can get a cheap and nasty one for £70

If yopu wanted to do it yourself it is not difficult, instructions can be found here-
