is a company allowed to run a credit check without my consent ??

hi all
as above
i had an alert on my experian credit file the other day and when i looked at it southern water has run a check against me
why i do not know ???
and i have not given any kind of consent for them to do so
here is what is says

They are allowed to under certain circumstances, yes. By way of example, for the purposes of detecting a crime, or in anticipation of or during court proceedings.
Why not do as the search says, and contact Equifax for clarification?0 -

many thanks for reply someone kindly sent me a pm saying that they probably have done it to check all my details are correct for court procedings
i have phoned them up three times and given them details to have my money taken out of my income support
the lady who took all my details last time said she could not understand why it has not all gone through yet and could see on the system that this was the third attempt
so it looks like i need to contact them in the morning to hopefuly get all this sorted out

What is your connection with Southern Water? Presumably they supply your water/waste ...? When did you first sign up to them?
Often, consent to a credit check is hidden in the small print and you might have consented, without realising it.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0
