Carphone Warehouse Geek Squad Insurance *BEWARE*

Anyone thinking about using the mobile phone insurance company Geek Squad through Carphone Warehouse, I wouldn't bother...

Firstly Geek Squad feel that they can take direct debit payments from my account whenever they choose. For example in July on the 16th they took the full £11.95 and then tried to take another payment from my account on the 31st, without my knowledge or permission. Thankfully HSBC haven't charged me this time, but they could well have done.

I emailed the geek squad insurance customer service to complaint and inform them that if they didn't change my direct debit details to the 1st of every month then i would terminate the account they replied:

Thank you for your e-mail, I can confirm that your payment date is fixed
at the 31st of each month and cannot be changed, this has been the case
since the start of the service.

Laughable since Geek Squad took money on the 16th! Surely a good company will let you choose the date of the direct debit? and it also makes me wonder how akward they would be should I make a claim!

Needed to get that off my chest

Was the 16th the first payment? If so, it may well be correct. If you sign a direct debit agreement, the first payment cannot be taken for a couple of weeks but the insurance will have already commenced and the first payment is due on the day cover begins so all they are doing is collecting arrears.
  • No the one prior to that was near end of June, I took out the insurance end of may. The last Direct Debit was rejected becuase I didn't have enough funds, I had asked them to change my direct debit payments to the 1st of every month. They haven't comunicated any payment dates with me apart from the last email telling me they wont change it to a more convieniant date for me. I am just cancelling the service!

That might be what the problem was then, the one on the 16th was the outstanding payment that they couldn't collect at the end of June, then the 31st was the normal monthly one for July

Nope the payment was taken end of June, payment taken 16th of July, payment for 31st July wasn't taken. There wasn't any outstanding payments.

Not sure of what network your on but I when I recently bought my phone from the Carephone Warehouse it worked out more cost effective (£6/month) to add the insurance onto my phone bill.

  • I took out a geek squad insurance policy back in March 2009 when I upgraded my phone. I've been a Carphone Warehouse customer for many years and as I was getting an iphone I decided the insurance would be worth it. I upgraded my phone again this August and just thought I should check my insurance policy as Carphone Warehouse were still taking my monthly direct debit from my account. They informed me that my new phone was not covered as I had not informed them of the upgrade and I had done the upgrade direct with O2. In my mind I have always been a carphone warehouse customer and my number has never changed since originally signed up with them. I don't see I did anything different from previous years and I'm really upset and disappointed by Carphone Warehouse, they have refused to refund my policy from my upgrade date. BE CAREFUL OF THESE GUYS - BE MORE ON THE BALL THAN I WAS!
  • Reviving an old one here - I found an old standing order against my bank account that has been coming off quarterly since 2001 for insurance I took out for a phone bought from the Carphone Warehouse. After speaking to Geek Squad they said if I could prove when I upgraded the phone via an official letter from Vodafone then I could get my money back.

Two months and a big load of annoying calls with Vodafone later, who have since switched systems and cleared a load of old data, I now have a letter saying when my contract was cancelled (2003). But Geek Squad are now refusing a refund on the basis that I can't actually prove when I stopped using that phone, when they said before I need an upgrade or cancellation letter!

I realise this was pretty much entirely my fault for not properly checking my bank statements for all this time but I had a similar thing with home insurance that a younger version of myself must have agreed to many moons ago - I proved to Direct Line that I moved out of that property several years earlier and I got a refund on that, plus got a two month refund on car insurance after I drove a car to Mongolia for charity and took my time getting back. Why is this case any different from them, who on earth has a phone from ten years ago?!?!

I lodged a complaint with the rather stern lass (don't know what they're teaching in phone-centre training school these days) and will hopefully get contacted in the next few days. Got her to give me their postal address so will be writing to them if I don't hear anything.
