Accommodation at Uni

I think you should just ring and ask. The worst they can say is that they're full (which they shouldn't be yet as they can't allocate places until they know definitely who's in, and the uni surely won't find that out until A level results day or close to it). And when he gets to uni he doesn't have to tell anyone that you found him the room!
I lived with at least one third year when I was in halls on campus (this was at York), so it's not unusual for it to happen.
Otherwise it may be worth seeing which letting agency/agencies the uni recommends and seeing if they know of any one room flats or similar. Or alternatively you could see if there are any spare rooms being advertised on the uni/student union website.

Definately chase the uni up and see. My OH's uni prefered students to stay in the uni accomodation so they could be sure they were close enough to lectures etc. They had 3 or 4 seperate buildings for different years. Its definately encouraged to atleast start there if possible.0

Has he gone to see the house by the way?0

At my uni the Students' Union has an advice unit which helps with accommodation- they're separate from the uni so they're impartial and more likely to tell it how it is, as it were... Maybe you could look on the website for your son's uni's SU and see if they have something similar, so that you could email them and ask if this is normal practice, and if there are any other options for him?0

Thanks for all the replies, I haven't had time to call the student accommodation as it's been a really busy day, DS emailed them last night to say he can't get through on the website although apparently he does have the right student ID number, I'm hoping it's not because they only help 1st years, I've found out there's a "findaroom" event at the end of the month but even that is for 1st years only! In reality he doesn't know any more about going to Uni than a 1st year so I'm quite disappointed to find that there aren't any resources for students going in later.
Anyway I digress.. they haven't emailed him back yet so I will be getting on to them by phone.
No, he didn't go to view the house, I enrolled older DS & GF to have a word, he takes more notice of those nearer his age & he now agrees that it doesn't sound quite right, I suppose any prospective student would be thrilled at the idea of a no rent room! It may have been OK but I just didn't like teh sound of it..
I will have a look at the student union, thanks JRR.0
