Need help with setting up external access to my server

Hi,
I have decided to set up my own sip server for voip calls, but I need help with registering an external device on another IP which is not a part of my home network to my server.
I have a Netgear TA612V set up as my main router which also does Voip. I have set up a sip server on an old PC on my home network and it has the static IP address 192.168.51.5. My external IP address is 77.87.123.12.
My brother lives 10 miles away and I want him to be able to connect to my server. His IP address at another location is 98.44.221.1. How do I get my brother voip router to register with my server at 192.168.51.5?
Do I need to use Port forwarding on my netgear router? Do i need to change firewall settings? etc

You have to set your router to forward port 5060 from the router's Internet IP address to your servers IP address.
Something like:
Forward 77.87.123.12:5060 to 192.168.51.5:5060
So anything looking for 77.87.123.12:5060 will get sent to you're PC's port 5060.
Or if you have good Security on your server you router should be able to set it up as a "DMZ" (Demilitarized Zone) Basically it tells the router to ignore all Firewalls and security on your router and sent everything to the IP listed.
(Handy for testing but not great for security once up and running)...Laters

Don't forget that Windows has a built in firewall since XP and that will need opening up for the port too.
The DMZ route would probably go a bit like this...
1. Disable windows firewall
2. Put PC in DMZ
3. Half hour later start to reinstall Windows.
At least that's the way it went for me when I was unwise enough to risk a naked windows box on the internet because I couldn't get something working. The real irksome bit was that the particular nasty my machine caught was 18 months old yet windows auto update hadn't patched it despite there being a KB download to do that.0 -
Just like mentioned above - entour your router settings and you'll be all set0

I have opened the ports on my router and forwarded all the ports I can think of 5060-5080, 3478-3479, 6060-6062, 3306. I can ping the computer at which the computer responds to, but I can't register the external ATA with the sip server. I have switched the windows firewall off too and tried DMZ also without success. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks0 -
Have you forwarded TCP and UDP ports (both port 5060)?
Take it out of the DMZ and make sure you forward both TCP and UDP in the router and allow them through the firewall.
It might be that you're ISP might be blocking those ports at their end (To stop people running stuff like this on the ISP's network.)
Try changing the Port to something like "50601" and see if that makes a difference.Laters

I think I was making a silly mistake and got it to register from an external IP. It's great I'm running my own sip server with multiple incoming lines, it's doing least cost routing for my calls which should off set the extra cost of running the PC 24/7, and the PC is downloading torrents during off peak hours and media streaming to my XBMC'ed XBOX
Just been watching Transformers 2 (ok but don't like the overtly sexualised content, thought it's a PG movie) 0
