Need really simple advice - LOL!

Ok i've gone and done a stupid thing. I set my password for my new laptop a couple of months ago but then didn't use it until i'd sorted out internet connection. I've now got internet connection, so the other night i got my laptop out to connect to the net for the first time .......and lo and behold....i can't remember that password!

and it's not one i would normally use - it was a brand new one for a brand new laptop :rotfl:

now it's a case of what to do......

and then if i can actually get connected - what would money savers advise as far as antiviral protection goes?

if anyone can help i'd really appreciate it! Thanks!

    You could try this

Reboot and while computer is booting up press F8 repeatedly and you will get into Safe Mode. If you miss it and end up at logon, just reboot and try again, Once in Safe Mode find your Account and I think you will be able to change your password.

If that's no good have a look here and see if it helps.

    Good luck
  • Thanks i'll give that a go, i've had a look at that link earlier today but just wondering if anyone could tell me in english - lol! No seriously it's just that my situation is simpler because i haven't used the computer at all yet, so don't needto worry about losing anything i might have put on it.

You may still be able to get hold of the reinstall/restore disks from the store or the manufacturer for free.

The other way is to use the admin account and change your password... But unfortunately high street retailers often put their own password on the admin accounts to prevent you gaining access.

Somewhere down the line you will need to restore it back to factory settings, so now's a good time to get the capability do it (and before you load any personal apps or data on it). Get hold of the restore discs and run them.

On antivirus, there was a thread from earlier today : http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1854435

This is the one that you need.
  • Thanks!

Donnie that site looks intriguing but i think, knowing me i'll just get confused.....

I've phoned up the company and they said i need to go to their website and purchase the back up discs as i didn't create any back up discs when i bought the computer. I would have done so, but i didn't realise just tapping in a password and then not using the machine for a while (and forgetting the password!) would cause so much trouble! LOL! I've always shared computers before and never responsible for setting them up.

Thanks for trying to help! :-)

    AVG - free.avg.com
is a good antivirus to use. You should also have antispyware such as Spybot- download.cnet.com/Spybot-Search-amp-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html
