Bristol to Manchester tickets seem expensive?

I need to go to Manchester next week to meet some family friends with my parents, but the return train tickets online seem to be very expensive, about £50-60. Is this how much money they are these days??

I checked the sticky but its 96 pages and there isn't a faq on there or anything.

Thanks again

A very quick glance shows that this journey can be done at £27 per person each way. That is Advance Singles. You did not say when (other than next week) so I have made some assumptions. As you have no doubt found, a fully flexible offpeak return is £65.
This info was gleaned from the NXEC website.
Have a play and see what you can find that suits you.
    Try splitting at Birmingham.

Have you read the Cheap Train Tickets article?
There is lots of information here, and there are lots of links in it to other resources.
  • Okay thanks, didn't see that flexible option, that would be convenient for me so I could go and leave any time on a given week or day?

    Not quite...
a fully flexible offpeak return is £65.
a fully flexible anytime return is £118.

Have a play on the NXEC site (link above) to find out which price applies to which trains.

Have you looked at buses instead?

I did Swansea to Manchester for £10 return with National Express earlier this year. It was one of their funfares but they can often be cheaper than train.

SUESMITH, it really does depend where you are starting from. £29.90 is very cheap from Penzance, for example.

Try spliting your journey at Newport (South Wales) there's plenty of £11 one way advance tickets available.

Bristol to Newport (South Wales) £8.90 off peak return
Newport (South Wales) to Manchester Pic £11 Advance Single
Manchester Pic to Newport (South Wales) £11 Advance Single
Newport (South Wales) to Bristol £0 off peak return

    Total: £30.90

Just give yourself plenty of time to make your connection at Newport
