  • That's a fairly comprehensive reply, it is a shame it ends with Caroline doing effectively nothing though. What would you say to replying, thanking her for her time, and asking what groups and politicians she is prepared to lobby on your behalf for a very worthy cause?
  • Think i'll have a word with my dad about this - he's a retired insurance man - see if i can get him on my case!

Been far too busy recently to keep up with things, but basically I've gotten a load of replies varying from 'nufink to do with me mate, sniff' to 'it's a local issue not a national one' (seriously!! lol, you really think it only affects people in london!!) to 'you've got nothing to complain about, it's all much better now' to 'government tell me there's nothing that should be done, they are very happy with the current situation'.

When I have a minute (half term then) I will be dashing off letters that include responses along the lines of 'well try harder then, what do I pay your wages for?' to 'I don't think so love, I get that you don't really want to get involved, and that's fine, but please don't lie about the reason why...' to 'you completely ignored the actual points I was making in my letter, despite quoting nearly the whole thing back to me in the beginning just in case I'd forgotten what I'd written' and 'um, wait a sec - I tell Gov what to do, not the other way around, they are MY representatives, not my keepers so they should listen to my views....'

    An angry Pixie will ensue.
Do not feed the trolls please.

Many of your members ask a question for quoting customers a home insurance premium, that if the customer, or anyone else in the household, has ever been declared bankrupt.

I would like you to provide evidence distinguishing between customers with no relation to bankruptcy, customers who have a relation to an undischarged bankruptcy, and customers who have a relation to a discharged bankruptcy, identifying the risks between all three groups.

If you are not able to provide this evidence, I request you instruct all your members there is no determinable risk between the three groups, and members must not ask the question as it is irrelevant within the realms of the Data Protection Act.

If an increased risk can be proven, it is important a line is drawn between how long an insurer can ask this question. For example, Budget Insurance ask if a person, or any member of their household, has ever been declared bankrupt. According to their terms of business, they reserve the right to void any claim where this matter is not declared. Yet a householder may invite a partner to live with them several years after a bankruptcy, and this matter may never come into discussion. Budget, to use just one example of the many companies who ask this question, would legitimately be able to void a subsequent claim despite the bankruptcy being years earlier and not relating to the policy holder.

If you can supply me with the evidence I have requested within the next fourteen days, I appreciate your assistance. This will be used in lobbying ministers who I am communicating with, including Lord Mandleson's office as Principle Secretary of State for BIS.

There must be research at university level on evaluating risk in terms of bankruptcy. Have you done a search on the PhD database ( both UK and USA)? As I am retired I no longer have ready access to this. Always worth checking who is sponsoring the student though.
The other research hypothesis is how the elapse of time from bankruptcy relates to risk (at a guess negative exponential).
Could the voiding term be challenged under the consumer unfair terms legislation. Suggest you have a word with trading standards/ someone who teaches in this area.
