Pupil Distance Measurements

Hi all,
Just looking for a bit of advice. I got an eye test from a high street optician a couple of months ago. Didn't buy glasses at the time because they were ridiculously expensive for what they were of which I am now glad because I went on to find an online optician who seem pretty good so far. Anyway I rang my optician to ask the measurement of my pupil distance for the form and they refused to give it to be citing the fact that because I am ordering it online they did not want to be held responsible if there was a mistake with the glasses. I'm no expert but surely this is not right. Can I go back and cite anything to MAKE them tell me the numbers?

It's the law that if you pay for a prescription, they have to give it to you. However, pupil distance measurements are not part of the prescription, so they legally don't have to give these to you.

Naming the company would be helpful so others can avoid them.0 -
Volcano is correct.
You could always nip to another optician and ask if they can record this for you, hopefully they might not charge much.0 -
I order my glasses from SelectSpecs but get my eye test done at Dollands. With SelectSpecs you can send an old pair of glasses to them with your order & prescription & they will measure the pupilory distance from those & return old specs to you by return post. It only costs an extra pound or two to do this. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Why did I think this thread was about how far away the school was for a free bus pass?0

You can download and print a PD ruler from selectspecs and DIY - it's better if you have a friend to help. You can measure it yourself with a metric ruler and a mirror - but this assumes your eyesight is good enough without glasses at that range! I tried both of the above (same result), then found an online tool at budgetspex (you have to register and upload a digital photo) which confirmed the figure. My new glasses arrived (from selectspecs - very pleased) a few days ago and they seem fine.

Quidco currently paying 18% at Glassesdirect, and an extra 10% off your order. Hope you remembered to check!!!0

Thank guys for your replies. The opticians in question is Vision Express - normally pretty good for a high street optician but I just found this answer bizarre and very unfair given that it is my information.
I'll have a look at SelectSpecs just now - I've found some lovely ones in the Glasses Direct website that I was going to go for. I suppose I'll just rope my partner into measuring my eyes for me - still think it's a ridiculous policy.
Advent - that's why I thought I'd come here becasue google just kept directing me to local authority websites and stuff about distances to school lol!0 -
Well the actual name for the measurement is Pupillary Distance. Perhaps we can get google to show this now!0

I want to say that for me the best method was a transparent (perspex) ruler and one of those little "light pens" you have on key rings. Mine is a laser pen with also a white LED.
Shine up to your eye and the difference in trying to make out where your pupil is in millimetres is vast. Completely transformed compared to the top light I was trying to work with. This way you should have an exact PD.0 -
the pupilary distance measurement is part of the dispensing process and not the test - where i work we don't take it until the customer has chosen a frame they intend to purchase. it is does not form part of the prescription and is up to the company dispensing the prescription to measure - if you are ordering online how they attempt to get an accurate measurment is the chance you take.Dogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0
